About

The concept of time pervades the field of art in various ways.
I have chosen the traditional Chinese Zodiac to represent this physicalized "time." The origin and development of the Chinese Zodiac date back centuries. As a tool for measuring time and a cultural symbol, the Chinese Zodiac is highly representative, both in its practical function for timekeeping and in the cultural meanings that have evolved from it.
The zodiac was born when people began to match the twelve branches with animals they were familiar with, making the system of years more visual. This made it easier for them to understand the sequence of years within at least a twelve-year cycle.
The most common function of the Chinese Zodiac was to facilitate the differentiation of every year and the ages among people. Using visual animals to denote the year of birth was much more convenient and memorable than remembering the sexagenary cycle.
Additionally, the Chinese Zodiac served as a means of naming. It was common for people to name children based on the zodiac animal of the year, month, day, and hour of their birth, with the year's animal being used more frequently. Animals like the pig, dog, ox, and sheep, among others, became common nicknames for children.
As the popularity and development of the Chinese Zodiac advanced, it increasingly became associated with the philosophy of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. To this day, many people still lean towards finding a partner whose zodiac sign is compatible with theirs, hoping to maximize happiness.

In today's world, where information is readily available, the need to use the zodiac for recording ages has diminished, and its superstitious nature has lessened. Although people still retain the habit of quickly deducing someone's age based on their zodiac sign, the Chinese Zodiac has gradually evolved into a facet of popular culture that is integrated into our lives.
The use of the Chinese Zodiac in art has never ceased. Its presence is abundant in films and television, with series like "The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac" taking the zodiac as a central theme. In recent years, the cultural industry has grown bolder in "designing cultural products and new images of the Chinese Zodiac," with articles even boldly asking, "Can the Chinese Zodiac overcome Mickey Mouse?" While it has always been a favorite subject in the arts, appearing in sculptures and jewelry, its most common application remains in traditional gold jewelry stores. Due to the influence of the Five Elements and compatible attributes, people tend to wear zodiac animal ornaments that match their own sign to bring luck. However, there is still significant room for innovation in moving beyond traditional images to create vivid and distinctive characters of the zodiac animals.

I aimed to integrate innovation with traditional jewelry elements by redesigning the images of the twelve zodiac animals. My inspiration comes from pearls, beads, and the outlines of cartoon characters.
Thus, I transformed them into twelve distinct, smooth, slightly rounded, cute, and interesting beads. Moreover, I have brought these ideas to life through 3D printing, introducing a wider selection of colors to my pieces while also infusing them with a more modern sensibility.
By utilizing them, I was able to visualize fragments of time. This allows time to "navigate" and "display" within my creations, better reflecting certain moments or the varying significance of temporalities. Introducing the element of flowing time enables some events or their temporalities to be presented more vividly. On the other hand, the images or animal figures of the twelve zodiac beads bring more fun and whimsical inspirations and associations to my work. The metal parts in my creations are primarily responsible for constructing scenarios and facilitating associative thinking, working in concert with each other to help me capture and present the moments I wish to seize and document.
