BROOCH

The character for "chicken" (鸡) coincidentally shares a homophony with "auspicious" (吉), making the chicken a symbol of good fortune in Chinese folk culture. It's common in Chinese folklore to hang or place chicken paintings indoors or on doors to signify good luck entering the home. Chicken paintings are imbued with meanings like "great luck and surplus" and "great fortune."
In this piece, I connect the zodiac chicken with more contemporary and fast-food culture elements, such as fried chicken or fried chicken boxes. This association allows the zodiac sign to transcend its traditional historical and cultural context, adding a layer of lightheartedness and humor to the piece.
